Lexus IS F Remains A V8-Powered Beast With Few Changes for 2014

Amid a slew of new and improved cars from Lexus, the IS F is one that soldiers on with few changes for 2014. But it is a special car that remains appealing even without much updating.
High end and high performance, this compact sedan used to seem so unlikely coming from hyper-conservative Lexus. Basically, the IS F is a hot rod, an amped up version of the otherwise tame IS. It looks serious, hunkered down on a lowered sport suspension, with 19-inch wheels crammed into swollen fenders.
But the real kicker is a monster V8 engine stuffed under the IS F’s bulging hood. With 416 horsepower and 371 pound-feet of torque on tap, it easily scorches tires and propels the car from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4.6 seconds.
The last time the IS F got tweaked was in 2011, when Lexus improved the suspension and steering system and added a Torsen rear differential.Unlike the rest of the IS line, which has been completely redone for the 2014 model year, updates to the six-year-old IS F are minor. They include such things as adding a standard carbon-fiber spoiler, changing the leather options for the interior, and converting the fog lamps to LEDs.
What’s most remarkable is the fact that Lexus continues to produce this model—which averages an estimated 18 miles per gallon overall—at a time when cars with V8 engines are getting killed in favor of more fuel-efficient alternatives.
For example, the BMW M3, which is all new for 2014 and competes with the IS F, ditches its V8 engine for a smaller turbocharged six-cylinder. The V8 used in the outgoing M3 delivers an estimated 16 miles per gallon in city and highway driving combined, whereas BMW says the new engine improves both fuel consumption and emissions by 25 percent.
That’s not to say the V8-powered IS F isn’t endangered. Lexus is being coy with future plans, but the fact that the IS F isn’t getting updated for 2014 with the rest of the IS line doesn’t necessarily bode well.
Ten years ago, a car like the IS F would have seemed almost ludicrous wearing the circular “L” logo of this mild-mannered automaker. It was a shocker when it debuted in 2008. No one was expecting Lexus of all companies, known for its sleepy high-end sedans, to create such a hellion. It is, after all, the luxury arm of ultra-conservative Toyota.
Fast forward five years. Now the IS F feels less out of place. It kicked off a performance-focused revolution within Lexus that gave rise to the fearsome and ultra-rare LFA super car. But more importantly, the IS F pioneered a whole new line of “F Sport” performance vehicles that Lexus is using to vamp up its image. The IS F was also a pioneer of sorts for the entire industry, as one of the first cars to get an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Although the all-new 2014 IS 350 F Sport is stealing the spotlight at the moment, the IS F remains a formidable machine. This became clear during a recent press event in Las Vegas where Lexus showcased its entire F Sport lineup. Gunning around a road course at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, it was easy to tell the IS F was developed on challenging racetracks like Fuji Speedway in Japan and the Nurburgring in Germany.
Compared with the other F Sport models, such as the GS 350 F Sport, IS 250 F Sport and LS 460 F Sport, the IS F felt more adept on the tight turns and fast chicanes of the 2.4-mile circuit in Vegas.
All of the cars were remarkably capable, but the IS F felt more at home on the track. It was like an untamed beast eager to break free and cause mayhem. The other F Sport models could be driven with abandon—there was no fear of exceeding their limits. Not the IS F. Its considerable power had to be reigned in on certain sections of the tight circuit.

Lexus confirmed at the press event in Vegas that it will include engine enhancements on future F Sport models, but the fate of the mighty V8 in the IS F remains unclear. With the way things are going in the industry, its days could be numbered. Enjoy it while you can.
The 2014 Lexus IS F is on sale now with a starting price of $64,260, including a requisite delivery charge of $910.

Sometimes the road to wealth isn’t paved at all

Is financial security eluding you? Maybe you should move to North Dakota. In 2012, North Dakota’s economy grew by 13.4 percent, which was significantly more than any other state. And according to this cost of living calculator, a $70,000 salary has the buying power of a $100,000 salary in Los Angeles. But perhaps you don’t want to move to the fourth least densely populated state. And moving anywhere is a total pain. Still, is it possible that moving to a lower cost of living area coupled with a decent salary could make a big difference to your bottom line? The short answer is yes, of course.
No matter where you live, it’s not really about how much you earn, and it’s not even about how much you spend. What really matters is your gap, or the difference between what you earn and what you spend. That gap is something I have tried to exploit to the best of my ability, first by spending as little as possible and then by earning as much as I possibly can.Part of my plan is accidental. A Midwesterner by birth, and now by choice, I fortunately find myself living in a low cost of living region of the U.S. There are pockets of expensive areas to be found in the Midwest, but overall the Midwest has a relatively low cost of living. We have to have something to compensate for the snow and humidity, right?
Jobs
Let’s just talk about the problems first: Low cost of living areas aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. Despite North Dakota’s robust economy, many areas have depressed economies. Take my county, for example. It’s full of “bedroom” communities, communities where people shop and work out of the community and then sleep and socialize at home. Many of the small towns are trying to revive their Main Streets, but it’s hard to compete, and the battle to stay in business gets more difficult every year.
Part of my county’s problem is that many people drive out of the county for work, because there aren’t many jobs available. Actually, since I’m kind of specialized, when I was employed full-time, I had to drive about 100 miles a day (round trip) to find a job that matched my qualifications. Fortunately, within an hour’s drive, there are several small cities, each with more employment options.Driving a lot has its own costs, but employers are offering more flexibility with working. With longer work days and telecommuting, location is less important to jobs than it used to be.Even though I am no longer a full-time employee, I have three part-time jobs. Two of the three part-time jobs aren’t location-dependent at all. That means I can work from home, saving money on clothes, food (sometimes) and most important, transportation costs. But it also means I could live in a low cost of living area and command a higher salary from a higher cost of living area. Theoretically.
Real estate
For most people, their housing costs are the biggest part of the budget. Even in a low cost of living area, housing markets can make a huge difference to your bottom line and your long-term goals.I’ve read many comments about astronomical housing prices in certain areas, prices that prevent many people from becoming homeowners at all. I don’t know how people can afford a modest $500,000 house on a regular salary. Our first house was 1,250 square feet, crookedly sitting (bad foundation) on 2.4 acres. It set us back $50,000, and, as a bonus, the burgeoning mice population was thrown in absolutely free. According to Zillow.com, the median home price in my town is a whopping $56,000, so our first house was below average (in more ways than just the price, actually).I know you’re not jealous of our first house and its quirks, but doesn’t $50,000 have a much better ring to it without the extra zero?
Just to show you the difference in housing markets, even in close communities, compare the median home price in my town ($56,000) with that in the same in the city where I work ($156,000), just 50 miles away.Imagine the difference $100,000 would make to your long-term financial goals. A smaller mortgage means lower monthly responsibilities which could mean a larger gap between earning and spending…for 15 to 30 years. That is one reason why many people live in the small towns surrounding the small cities: they can reap the benefits of the higher city salaries while also reaping the benefits of cheaper housing.
Country (gravel) roads
Like I said above, I’ve tried to increase my gap as much as possible. Living in a low cost area of living is just one weapon in my arsenal, but I know my choices aren’t for everyone. Some people would prefer to have the normal nightlife, instead of our four-legged variety. Or they would prefer to avoid the gravel roads (that’s where the unpaved part of the title comes in) of some low cost of living areas. Or they just want some excitement of any kind. But these choices work for me in other ways, too, so I am happy to keep doing my thang of living here. And reaping the benefits of a low cost of living is just icing on the cake.
I believe that the cost of living can make a huge difference to anyone’s financial success. Would you be willing to move to a location with a lower cost of living if you could improve your financial situation? Do you think this is something most people think about?

An Introduction to Life Insurance

Protecting your family from financial disasters is one of the fundamental components of financial planning. Life insuranceshould be a core part of that planning process. This article is a basic primer on life insurance, which should introduce you to the concept and give you an idea of how life insurance works.
What is life insurance?
Most people have a basic understanding of insurance. You receive financial compensation when an insured event occurs. Consider auto insurance, for example. If your car is in an accident or stolen, your insurance company provides compensation according to the terms outlined in your insurance policy.
On the surface, life insurance is pretty straightforward. When the insured person dies, the policy pays a prearranged amount to the designated beneficiary. The following parties are generally involved in a life insurance policy:
  • The Insured. The person on whose life the policy is based.
  • The Beneficiary. The person who receives the payment.
  • The Owner. The person responsible for payment of premiums. It is typically the insured, but it could be the beneficiary.
  • The Insurer. The insurance company that issues the policy promising payment.
Traditionally, both spouses have life insurance policies in order to protect their family in case one of them dies.
Why purchase life insurance?
The main purpose of any life insurance policy is to protect your family and loved ones against the risk of financial uncertainty. Life insurance can provide for the welfare of your family in face of your death. If you have a spouse, three kids, a mortgage, car payments, and credit card bills, what would happen to them if you were suddenly to die? Would your family have enough money to keep the house, car, pay off credit card debt, and send your children to college?
Life insurance can guard your family and loved ones from potential financial disaster.
Types of life insurance
While the idea of life insurance may be pretty basic, there are some complexities to consider. The most important point to remember is that there are several different types of life insurance products, which can make it difficult to select the right one for your family and your financial needs.
There are two basic forms of life insurance — term life and permanent life, the latter of which comes in several flavors. Here’s a quick breakdown of the basic policy types:
Term life is the simplest and (typically) cheapest form of life insurance. Term life is designed to provide coverage for a fixed period of time, such as 5, 10, or 20 years. The premium for the term policy is guaranteed for the duration of the term; if it is a renewable policy, the premium will increase with each renewal. The premiums for renewals are generally guaranteed when the original policy is issued. Because term life policy is for a specific period of time and the payout does not increase, the overall cost of term life insurance is usually very low.
The other three common types of life insurance are permanent policies &mash they last for the entire life of the insured, not just for a fixed period of time.
Whole life policies, for example, are designed to provide you and your loved one with coverage until your death. Unlike term life, there are no fixed periods for whole life coverage. Whole life is sometimes referred to as “cash value” insurance because it builds cash value over your lifetime. Whole life coverage contains both investment and insurance components. The investment portion invests your premiums, earns interest, and accumulates a cash value. On the other hand, the policy also has a stated insurance coverage amount that is paid upon the death of the insured.
One of the most popular forms of permanent life insurance is variable life. Variable life policies allow you to invest your premiums in the stock market. While a variable policy may offer more significant returns, it’s also at the mercy of stock market performance. In a poor performing market, the overall death benefit/cash value of the policy may decline — but never below a defined level. As a result, the policy may be more expensive because you may have to pay more to keep the policy active because less money is available to cover the policy’s premiums.
Universal life is a popular option that acts like whole life. It is a renewable policy — the investment component, premiums, and death benefits can be renewed and changed based upon the policy owner’s needs. The policy owner has flexibility over the policy — money can be moved between the insurance and investment components of the policy. The premiums, unlike whole life policies, can be paid out of interest from the accumulated savings.
Life insurance: A great tool
Because of its many options and overall flexibility, life insurance can be a powerful tool in your financial planning arsenal. Consider that life insurance can be used to pay for funeral costs, college tuition, mortgage payments, debts, and more. It can also serve as income replacement — providing your spouse and family with a greater sense of financial certainty. Make sure you compare multiple quotes from different providers to make sure you’re getting a good rate, but also be careful to make sure you’re being priced for the same level of coverage (here’s a table where you can compare different life insurance companies).
Remember, like all insurance policies, your coverage can lapse if you do not make timely payments. If you need help to cope with the complexities of life insurance, contact an insurance professional. You should also read the fine print closely (possibly with the help of your insurance professional) to understand if there are any limitations on the policy and what it covers.

PM Sharif says Pakistan-India arms race a 'massive waste'

UNITED NATIONS: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Friday categorically demanded an immediate halt to drone attacks as they were a sheer violation of Pakistan's sovereignty, Geo News reported.

"The attacks conducted by US-led NATO forces on Pakistani soil using unmanned spy planes are counter-productive to the anti-extremism efforts", Sharif said while addressing United Nations General Assembly here in New York.
Sharif said that the war against terrorism must be waged within the framework of international law.
He added that the use of drone strikes in the border areas of Pakistan was a continued breach of the country's territorial integrity.
"It results in casualties of innocent civilians and is detrimental to our resolve and efforts to eliminate extremism and terrorism from Pakistan."
He added that he had urged the United States to cease these strikes, so that further casualties and sufferings could be averted.
Commenting on regional situation he said that Pakistan and India had wasted "massive resources" on a nuclear arms race.
"Our two countries have wasted massive resources in an arms race," Sharif said in his speech to the assembly. Both sides have spent huge amounts on developing a nuclear bomb over the past three decades.
"We could have used those resources for the economic well-being of our people," he added.
"We still have that opportunity. Pakistan and India can prosper together; and the entire region would benefit from our cooperation."
Sharif said, "We stand ready to re-engage with India in a substantive and purposeful dialogue."
The Pakistan premier, elected this year, said he was looking forward to the chance "to make a new beginning" and added "we have a solid basis to do that."
Sharif said Pakistan and India must build on a 1999 accord which called for the resolution of all differences through negotiations.
"I am committed to working for a peaceful and economically prosperous region. This is what our people want and this is what I have long aspired for," Sharif said.
He pointed out that shortly after assuming office‚ he received a message of goodwill from the Indian Prime Minister.
Sharif said he had invited the Indian Prime Minister to engage with Pakistan to address all outstanding issues between the two countries, adding Indian Prime Minister's response was positive.
Nawaz Sharif is expected to meet with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday, on the sidelines of the annual gathering of world leaders at the UN.
However on Kashmir, he said that suffering of the people cannot be brushed under the carpet‚ because of power politics.
He called upon the international community to give an opportunity to Kashmiris to decide their future peacefully‚ in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.
He said the issue of Jammu and Kashmir was presented to the Security Council in January 1948 and yet the issue remains unresolved after nearly seven decades.
The Prime Minister said Pakistan desired regional peace and stability adding, he said he had shared this vision with leaders in the neighborhood.
About Afghanistan‚ the Prime Minister said Pakistan supports an inclusive‚ Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process‚ leading to national reconciliation.
Prime Minister Sharif said that during President Hamid Karzai's visit to Pakistan‚ he assured him that Pakistan did not wish to interfere in Afghanistan's internal affairs and it had no favorites in that country.
He said Pakistan encourages UN efforts for the stabilization of Afghanistan.
"We will work together with Afghanistan for regional and economic cooperation that would establish and reinforce regional trade‚ energy and communications corridors."
He said a manifestation of Pakistan's solidarity with the Afghan people had been our willingness to host millions of Afghan refugees in Pakistan for many decades.
Going forward he added that having been suffered grievously for the past many years Pakistan condemned terrorism in all its forms and manifestations.
"In the past 12 years‚ Pakistan has given huge sacrifices‚ in blood and resources" Sharif said.
"We have lost 40,000 precious lives including 8,000 defense and security personnel" the PM added.
He said there have been colossal damages to social and physical infrastructures as well. "Our economy has been denied the opportunity to grow fully. This must change now", he added.
The Prime Minister said he had tried to forge national consensus on a cohesive policy to eliminate terrorism from our soil.
"We are resolved to oppose the forces of terrorism‚ by all means at our disposal", said he.
At the same time‚ Pakistan had offered dialogue to end violence‚ wean young extremists off extremism‚ and integrate all segments of the society into the national mainstream, added Sharif.
He‚ however‚ added that a dialogue should not be seen as a sign of weakness or a tool of appeasement.

"The terrorism knows no borders. It has no religion or creed, which is why maligning a whole people or a religion on this account, is unfair and unwise", said the Prime Minister.
He said Islam is a religion of peace, compassion and brotherhood.
"And yet most insidious form of contemporary racism in the name of religion is on the rise. Peaceful Muslim communities are profiled and subjected to discriminatory practices. Their faith, culture, holy personalities and scriptures are under attack", he added.
Sharif said stereotyping of Muslims as extremists and terrorists must stop.
"We must all use the influence and reach of the United Nations to avert a clash of civilizations and promote harmony among followers of diverse religions, all around the world."
"Terrorism negates Islam’s humanistic outlook and noble values. Those who perpetrate terrorism are enemies of Muslims and Islam itself", he said.
Speaking on the Peshawar church attack, he said, "We are deeply saddened by the recent terrorist attack on the members of a minority community in Peshawar."
He said , this heinous attack had united the entire Pakistani nation in support of our brothers and sisters of all faith in Pakistan.
"We share their grief and declared three days of mourning. This attack has been carried out by the same elements who have attacked our mosques, our shrines, innocent citizens, and members of our security forces", he added.
This attack had further strengthened Pakistan's resolve to deal with terrorism and extremism in a resolute and comprehensive manner.
Speaking with regard to its atomic arsenal, he said that as a responsible nuclear weapon state, Pakistan would continue to pursue the goals of disarmament and non-proliferation and adhere to the policy of Credible Minimum Deterrence (CMD), without entering into an arms race.
"We would not, however, remain oblivious to the evolving security dynamics in South Asia, nor would we agree to arrangement that is detrimental to our security and strategic interests. Our position on the proposed Fissile Material Treaty is determined by our national security interests and the objective of strategic stability in South Asia", said he.
Safe, secure and peaceful use of nuclear energy, without discrimination, was essential for economic development, the premier said further.
"Pakistan qualifies for full access to civil nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, to meet its growing energy needs, for continued economic growth", he stressed.
Sharif said that by the same token, as a mainstream partner in the global non-proliferation regime, Pakistan had impeccable credentials to join the multilateral export control regime, including the Nuclear Suppliers Group.
"Pakistan will continue to participate constructively in the Nuclear Security Summit (NSS) process, which is a laudable initiative."
The prime minister also reiterated Pakistan’s support for the Palestinian people’ss right to self-determination and statehood and expressed support for a recent international agreement aimed at placing Syrian chemical weapons under international control.
He called for a resolution of the lingering Syrian conflict.

Bolivian President Evo Morales has accused the United States of harboring terrorists and urged that UN headquarters be moved from New York.
Morales made the remarks in his speech to the 68th UN General Assembly on Wednesday, AFP reported.
“I would like you to be aware that the United States harbors terrorists and the corrupt,” said Morales, adding, “They take refuge here, and the United States does not help in the fight against corruption.”
The socialist president called for the United Nations to leave New York City because of US "blackmail" and bullying.
"No guaranteed visas, no guaranteed overflights. We feel threatened, bullied and blackmailed over visas," he said, adding that the United States "has never ratified treaties related to human rights."
“We must seriously think about changing the headquarters of the United Nations," said Morales.
The Bolivian president also told the annual UN leaders' summit that he did not feel safe in the US because of spying and security concerns.
"How can we be safe at a meeting of the United Nations here in New York? Some do not believe in imperialism and capitalism and feel totally unsafe," Morales said.
The UN headquarters has been in New York since the global body's creation in 1945.

Maulana Fazl ur Rehman shocked! JUI lost the seat after 52 years

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has served a major blow to Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) as its candidate Engr. Dawar Khan Kundi is all set to defeat Maulana Asad Mehmood of JUI-F by a convincing margin in today’s poll in NA-25 Dera Ismail Khan. JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman won the seat by obtaining over 90,000 votes in general election 2013 along with two other National Assembly seats. Maulana decided to take oath from NA-24 and vacated the other two seats i.e. NA-25 (D.I.Khan) and NA-27 (Lukky Marwat). Jamiat awarded NA-27 ticket to Maulana Ata-ur-Rehman, former federal minister for tourism while NA-25 went to Maulana Asad Mehmood, son of JUI-F Chief. By-elections in NA-25 were postponed due to security concerns in the area. Jamiat lost NA-27 seat to PTI candidate as well. NA-25 is considered as home constituency of Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman and defeat on this is definitely a major political setback for him. According to unofficial results of Dawar Khan Kundi is leading the polls race by a margin of over 15,000 votes.

Khrian Khrian...
