Islamabad: A contempt of court petition has been filed in the Supreme Court against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for not adhering to court directives in the treason case against former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf.
The application was filed in the apex court by Advocate Ahsanul Din Sheikh.
The petition contended that all the parties, which had violated the Supreme Court’s July 3 order, should be handed down punishment in accordance with the rules of the law.
It moreover said that the court should issue directives to the concerned parties for implementation of its earlier order in the treason case against Musharraf and that the former president should not be allowed to leave the country until completion of investigation against him.
The application alleged that all the respective parties in the treason case had not fulfilled their responsibilities which was tantamount to violating the court’s orders. It furthermore alleged that the parties had deliberately disobeyed the court’s orders.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Law Secretary Zafarullah Khan, Interior Secretary Shahid Khan, Director General of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Saud Mirza and Musharraf were made parties in the petition.
Earlier on July 3, the Supreme Court had disposed of the petitions calling for the registration of a treason case against Musharraf and had directed the government to continue approaching the matter in light of its official statement presented to the court.
The government had in its statement said that it would proceed in accordance with the law and prosecute Musharraf for treason — after taking the political forces into confidence.
