ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC) has accepted the new schedule proposed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday, Geo News reported.
A three-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the petition seeking delay in the local bodies elections today. During the hearing, the court approved the new schedule suggested by the ECP and ordered the commission and provincial governments to set the dates after consent.
The CJ remarked that it is the ECP’s responsibility to hold local bodies elections and not the provincial governments or SC’s task.
The ECP had earlier written a letter to the Registrar of SC, proposing new dates for the LB elections.
The letter was written by the Director General ECP to the SC Registrar, suggesting new dates for the polls. According to the schedule proposed by the ECP, the local bodies elections could be held on January 30, 2014 in Punjab and January 18 in Sindh. Moreover, local bodies election in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province were proposed in the month of February.
The ECP, in its letter, further stated that the polls are being arranged on December 7 in Balochistan following the court’s orders.
The commission pleaded for delay in the local bodies elections.
The letter was then sent to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry while notices were issued to the attorney general, and advocate generals of Sindh and Balochistan.
