2014 BMW X5: An Absolute Brute

Since its inception in 1999, the BMW X5 has been the market leader in the Sports Activity Vehicle segment. The X5 is also known to be one of BMW’s best-selling model series accounting for almost a third of all BMW models sold globally. The third generation, 2014 BMW X5, has undergone a few upgrades and can now be seen in showrooms across Dubai, Sharjah and the Northern Emirates.

Looks

Upon first glance, the X5 remains unchanged for the most part. New headlights extending into the broad-set kidney grille, horizontal lines and taut surfaces optimise the side profile while new rectangular shaped exhaust pipes and accentuated lights beautify the rear end.

Feel

Though the x5 has undergone interior improvements, it still remains distinctively BMW. Due to the model's 3.2cm extended wheelbase, the cockpit now incorporates a slightly raised seating position. Moving away from slightly restricted seating capacity, the 2014 X5 is available with an optional third row of seats making it a seven-seater. Additionally, the boot is now capable of storing 1,870 litres, a noticeable increase on its predecessor's capacity.

Engineering

On the technological front, the 2014 BMW X5 features a new touch sensitive iDrive controller which enables users to write letters on the surface of the controller instead of having to scroll for letter input. Furthermore, adaptive suspension with Comfort, Dynamic, Professional and Adaptive M Suspension settings makes its way to the 2014 X5.

What's on offer?

With BMW's Twin Power Turbo technology and EfficientDynamics, the 2014 BMW X5 is faster than ever. Under the hood sits an enhanced twin turbo 4.4 litre V8 that produces 450 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. This makes a 0-100 km/h run possible in an extremely impressive 4.9 seconds. Joining the engine line up in April 2014 will be the smaller xDrive35i V6 engine capable of producing 306 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque.

On the whole then, the 2014 BMW X5 is slightly bigger, slightly faster and slightly more efficient than its predecessor. But is this enough to justify its price tag? We sure think so!
