Pakistan outplay South Africa to level series


DUBAI: Pakistan defeated South Africa by 66 runs to level the five-match One-day International series 1-1 here at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday.

South Africa had recorded a sensational one-run win in the first match at Sharjah on Wednesday.

Chasing a modest total of 210 South Africa batsmen could not resist against the Pakistan’s accurate pace and spin attack and were bowled out for 143 in 40.4 overs.

Fast bowler Mohammad Irfan and leg-spinner Shahid Afridi captured three wickets each while off-spinner Saeed Ajmal claimed two wickets.

Main scorers for South Africa were Ryan Mclaren (29 not out), Jean-Paul Duminy (25) and Wayne Parnell (21).

Earlier, Pakistan were all out for a modest total of 209 in 49.4 overs after their captain Misbah-ul-Haq won the toss and elected to bat.

Opener Ahmed Shaehzad top scored with 58 followed by Mohammad Hafeez (26) Shahid Afridi (26) and Misbah (25).

Misbah completed 1,000 ODI runs in the current year of 2013, becoming the third batsman to achieve the milestone after Australia's George Bailey and India's Virat Kohli. He is the first Pakistani captain to make 1000 or more runs in a calendar year.

Shahid Afridi hit four boundaries off 20 balls while Wahab Riaz hit two sixes in his 18.

For South Africa, pace bowlers Ryan McLaren claimed four wickets for 34 and Morne Morkel bagged three for 38.

The third One-day International between the two countries will be played at Abu Dhabi on November 6.
