Islamabad: Chief of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has filed a constitutional petition at the Supreme Court, challenging Qamar Zaman Chaudhry’s appointment as Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
The PTI chief, in his petition, stated that the high-level appointment is illegal which the apex court should declare null and void.
Khan, making the federal government and NAB chief Qamar Zaman Chaudhry parties in the petition, stated that Chaudhry was serving as Secretary Interior Ministry when he was appointed head of the NAB.
“It is, therefore, a violation of Article 6 of the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO) under which a serving officer could not be hired as Chairman NAB.”
The petition further argued that legal procedure of consultation was also not followed by the government in the appointment of Qamar Zaman Chaudhry and that he was a ‘blue-eyed’ of the former dictator General Ziaul Haq and then later became ‘loyal to the PPP leadership’.
The PTI chief opposed Chaudhry’s appointment also on the ground that he was served contempt of court notice which disqualifies him for the top NAB slot.
